About This Quote

Compare and contrast is a common objective of writing. When you’re writing a story, you want to draw comparisons between the things you’re describing and the things you’re comparing it to. But a real life story, or a great story, or any story really, should not be based on comparisons because that will only take away from the actuality of the things being compared. In other words, if you compare your life to Paul McCartney’s life because he has all the money in the world and is just as famous as you are, then your story isn’t going to be interesting because you have nothing to compare it with. You can make comparisons, but they have to be good ones.
